The side fender attaches to the canal narrowboat or barge by a single rope that passes right through the rubber tube. The rope is knotted above and below the tube. A steel washer on the bottom prevents pull through.

If your boat has small eyelets on the gunnels or grab rail you could purchase short rope side fenders. They are exactly the same but with a shorter length of 6mm hempex rope.
