A fid or Swedish fid is a conical shaped tool usually made from wood or metal (sometimes the handles are even plastic). Fids are used to work with rope and traditional type fenders.
They differ from a marlinspike in material and purpose. A marlinespike is a solid metal implement with an eye at the thick end; they are used when working with wire rope and shackles. Comparatively A fid is used to hold open knots and pass rope through holes in fenders. A fid can also be used to open the strands of a rope (synthetic or natural) for splicing purposes.
This particular Fid is comprised of a stainless steel shaft with a wooden handle. The total length of the fid is 28cm.
